WHAT IS SHAANTI + FUNKSHAAN?
If you were British South Asian, chances are you’ve had a few nights at Shaanti. From the late ‘90s, the Multi-Award Winning Shaanti (and the legendary club night Funkshaan, Bindi Beat-Box and Indo-Funk) were a staple of U.K. rave culture, playing bhangra, garage, drum and bass, breaks, Bollywood-house, R&B and Desi hip-hop mashups for a generation of British Asians. With live club broadcasts on Radio 1, room takeovers at Fabric and 333 Club, a ten-year monthly club residence at Cargo, a twelve-year residency at The Medicine Bar in the Custard Factory, two Tent Takeover at The Big Chill Festival, a three-disk complication album release with Ministry of Sound/Decadance, a radio show on Galaxy FM and record label (Shaanti Play Records)… across two decades. Shaanti helped define the UK’s club spirit and are a true institution of the South Asian music scene.

WHO ARE THEY? SHAANTI are a British South Asian institute from Birmingham. Launched in Feb 1999, Shaanti is a pivotal part of British history: the UK Asian Underground-Bhangra-Desi Collective gave way to new identities, their legendary club nights helped South Asian’s claim a safe space and produced a new generation of world-class DJs, radio presenters and producers here in the UK, Indian and Pakistan. They are one of the UK’s most respected club brands, record labels (Shaanti Play Records) and festival creators having advocated complex leftfield Asian breaks, bhangra and fusion of British club genres as its musical road map since arriving in 1999. This UK institute returns hard with a double-edged celebration with the return of their desi club night Funkshaan and an impressive line-up of monthly daytimers under the Massi’s Yard umbrella. Breaking down barriers in the mainstream Shaanti has gone on from strength to strength, championing original concepts first up and down the country.

Never aligned with just one genre, they currently host several UK day-to-night daytimers and festivals across the UK championing UKG (BrunchUKGarage/UKG Diner Heartless Crew, Wookie…,) RNB (R&B Brunch/ RNB Supper Club,) DNB (Brunch DNB) and Hip Hop (Brunch Hip Hop) … festivals also include The Eastern Electronic Festival (31 days across Birmingham,) The Holi Rave Festival (2022,) The Female Takeover (Southbank Centre) and most recently the Brunch DNB Festival (Fabio + Grooverider, Byran Gee…) The Jerk Festival Independent Day Festival (Channel One Sound System). Shaanti is the stuff of legends and it has the honour of being one of the longest-running club festival organisers and promoters in the UK.
